Amoxicillin belongs to a class of drugs called penicillin antibiotics. It has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat people with infections caused by certain types of bacteria. Amoxicillin has not been approved by the FDA to use when treating people who have been exposed to anthrax. Amoxicillin is stable in the acid gastric secretion and is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration. The presence of food does not interfere with this process. Peak plasma concentrations are obtained in about two hours, producing around 2.5 times the peak concentration resulting from comparable doses of ampicillin.
